The password INIT/cdev is a little utility which keeps people from booting your hard disk, without you present. It is not meant as any real form of piracy protection (just about any semi-hacker could get past it), but is meant from keeping your average moron from wandering by and moving saying "Oh, I wonder what this little button does", and the next thing you know, you desktop is thoroughly unrecognizable, and you system file is trashed.
Entering the password is obvious, just type it in and hit return or click the OK button. Changing the password is slightly more difficult, but not much. Just go to the control panel, scroll down to password, and choose it. As soon as you have typed in you old password, the "Change" button will become active, now you can type in a new password, and hit return (or click change), and there it is. The next time you boot up, the new password will be in effect.
The password is currently set to 'Spud', just in case you install the INIT without changing the password first (by dragging the cdev into the system folder, just like any other cdev). I also suggest that leave the name of the file as it is '•Password' so it is alphabetically last, or change it so it is alphabetically first. The reason for this is only cosmetic, because my INIT clears the screen when it executes, wiping out any icons that other INITs have put up. It looks kind of silly when the next INIT puts its icon floating off to the right, thinking that there are other icons already there.
The utility is absolutely FREE. If you do use it, though, I would like to hear from you. Any comments or suggestions about this program, or any ideas for any other utilities (or games, or anything …) are welcomed. Please send me something to tell me that what I am writing is getting some use. I will continue to update this utility, so if you want a newer version, just send a disk and return postage along with your comments. The address is:
